Candy Review: Random Seasonal Candy

Food manufacturers are always experimenting with new flavors, new themes, and new ideas. I always welcome such things--innovation is good, especially when it comes to delicious things--even if the execution is not as great as one would expect. So let's take a look at some random new flavors that I've accumulated over the past few months: Pumpkin Spice Oreos, Smores Candy Corn, and Bubble Gum Peeps.

Pumpkin Spice Oreos: Every fall, consumers are inundated with pumpkin spice-flavored items. Usually it's for the good, but not always. Thankfully, Pumpkin Spice Oreos fall into the former. I'm normally not a huge fan of non-chocolate Oreo flavors, but I was pleasantly surprised by this product. The flavor isn't too strong to be overwhelming, which is a problem for a lot of pumpkin-flavored things, and it hits just the right balance of cookie and cream. I'd still say it would have been better with chocolate, but what isn't? It's hard to find, but it's worth at least trying out.

Smores Candy Corn: Have we progressed as a society far enough that it's now just "smores" instead of "s'mores"? I don't know; I'll leave that to the linguists and the historians (and, I guess, the marketing team at Brach's, who fall squarely into the S'mores camp). In any case, I'm willing to try this product; I'm not a huge fan of candy corn but I am a huge fan of smores. Sadly, this product tastes more like candy corn than it does smores. While they aren't bad, and they do have a certain chocolatey-marshmallow flavor to them, I can't help but think I'm simply eating candy corn. While I would recommend trying it, I'm not sure if I could eat a whole lot of them in a season.

Bubble Gum Peeps: OK, so maybe this isn't seasonal, unless Japan has come out with the equivalent of a bubble gum themed federal holiday. (Knowing the Japanese, this isn't all that absurd.) As with candy corn, I'm not in love with peeps. I like them a little better than I used to, but not by much. I'm also ambivalent with bubble gum flavored things unless I plan on chewing on it for a while. In this case, the Peeps actually taste more like marshmallow than bubble gum; in fact, if it weren't for the smell (which is undeniably bubble gum) I'm not sure if I could place the flavor at all. So if you like Peeps and want to try something different, these are pretty good; but if you're like me, and like bubble-gum flavor in theory more than in practice (and Peeps less than either), you may want to give this one a pass.
